Properly-inflated tires are not only a good safety practice, but also help prevent premature tire wear, shorten braking distances, ensure good handling, and even help prevent blowouts. A tire pressure monitoring system is a key component of proper tire health.

TPMS systems use either direct or indirect monitoring. Both trigger warning lights in the dashboard when air pressure falls below spec. Direct monitoring uses sensors mounted inside the tire and rim assembly to gauge air pressure. 

Indirect monitoring works with the car’s anti-lock braking system, and monitors wheel rotation. When a tire is underinflated, it will rotate at a different speed than the others, triggering a warning light. It’s a good rule of thumb to have the TPMS sensors and system inspected during each tire rotation.
