Tread is the part of the tire that contacts the road and terrain and naturally wears down with time and miles. When tread wears down, the tire loses its grip, which can cause hydroplaning on wet roads, or blowouts in hot, dry conditions.

Most new tires come with a tread depth of 10/32-inch, and should be replaced when they wear down to 2/32-inch. An easy way to know when it’s time to replace your tires is to place a penny upside-down in one of the tread grooves. When you can see most or all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace the tire.
