There are a few rules of thumb for getting the most useful life out of your tires. First is knowing and maintaining correct pressure. Every car is different, so you’ll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendation. Typically this is posted inside the driver-side doorjamb, or at the rear of the door itself. Cars older than 2003 will have this information in the owner’s manual.

Two other general rules to follow for prolonged tire life include addressing any alerts you get from the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Typically an illuminated TPMS light means you simply need to top up one or more tires with air, although it can also mean a sudden drop in pressure due to a puncture.
